Simplicity 8376 Serger Knit Top

Hello sewers and sergers!

Here is an easy, quick, nice-fitting pattern for your summer tops.
Simplicity 8376 gives many options for pattern hacking.

This one is View 1, the Base Pattern.
It is the perfect pattern for not only new-to-knit sewers,
but also for experienced sewers who might be new to using an overlocker.

You do not have to sew this on a serger/overlocker,
but the pattern and the overlocker make a perfect pair.

If you are in the local area, I'm teaching this as a Baby Lock Serger event
at Wimmers in Layton on Saturday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
My Silhouette Cameo teaching friend, Dana,
will be joining me to show you how to add a monogram to your top.

Price of admission includes
your fabric (the fabric has a beautiful drape - it is viscose and spandex),
vinyl monogram, lunch, and lots of fun.

We will discuss knit fabric choices,

I will give you tips for matching stripes,

we will attach a self-fabric neck band,

and we will stitch the entire top using Baby Lock sergers.

Okay, let's go sew some new summer tops.

Thanks for visiting.

"Un-Beweavable" Ruffled Scarf

If you are a serger owner, I would like to recommend the book:
Serger Essentials by Gail Patrice Yellen.
This book includes advice on threading, tension, differential feed, and needles
relevant to all models.
It also give tips for using decorative threads and techniques
 - and -
it includes instructions for 5 simple projects
This lightweight knit scarf is one of those 5 projects.
It is also the project for my February 28 Baby Lock Serger Class
at both Wimmer's locations:  Layton and Ogden
I had this very, very (almost sheer) lightweight spandex knit on hand,
so I decided to give it a try.
The instructions call for t-shirt weight knit fabric.
I'm actually quite pleased with the scarf.

The edges are finished with a rolled hem
and serger chains are woven into the slits that are cut into the scarf,
using a skip cut rotary cutter blade.

Then beads are tied onto the ends of the serger chains.

If you are in the local area, head to Wimmer's and sign up for the class.
I would be pleased to meet you in person.

Thank you for visiting.

Serger Tote for Rotary Rulers and Cutter

This is the December 27 Baby Lock Serger Class at both Wimmer's locations:
Ogden from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
and
Layton from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

If you are nearby, I would love to have you join us.
Go to Wimmer's Web site to sign up.

Carry your quilting supplies in style with
the Rotary Ruler and Cutter Bag.
The pattern is from Martha Pullen Company.

The handle goes through the small loop to keep the bag closed.

The bag is large enough to carry a 6 1/2" x 24" ruler,
and it has smaller inside pockets to accommodate your
3" x 6" and 3" x 18" rulers and your rotary cutter.
Batting is sandwiched between the exterior panels and the lining panels
to give the bag stability.

I hope to see you in class!

Thank you for visiting.

Vintage Inspired Apron

This is the November 29 Baby Lock Serger Class at both Wimmer's locations:
Ogden from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
and
Layton from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

If you are nearby, I would love to have you join us.
Go to Wimmer's Web site to sign up.

The pattern is Simplicity 1221.
I modified it to be sewn entirely on the serger.
Instead of purchased binding,
we will make custom binding using the binder attachment.

The patch pocket is sewn on using the chain stitch.

The ties are finished off with a rolled hem.

This would make a lovely,
new apron for you to wear during your Christmas baking,
- or -
it would make a thoughtful gift for someone special.

Do you use your serger for more than just finishing seams?
Let me know in the comment section.

Thanks for visiting today.

Basic Serger Pillow with Hidden Zipper Closure

Happy Fall, sewing friends!
It's time to start sewing for Christmas!
This is the October serger project that I am teaching
at our local Baby Lock/Husqvarna Viking dealer.

The pillow cover itself is just a basic, simple, no-frills cover.
The fun part is learning how to serge the hidden zipper closure.
Since very few supplies and fabric are required,
this makes a perfect inexpensive but heartfelt gift.
Once you learn the basics, the possibilities are endless.
So many options are available for personalizing this serger project.
The front of the pillow cover could be embellished with embroidery (machine or hand),
the front could be made from a large quilt block,
or the front could be made from a pre-printed block.
Sew many possibilities!
This is a serger only class, no sewing machine needed.

If you are in the local area, here's your invitation to join the fun:
WHEN:  Wednesday, October 27, 2017
TIME:  9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. @ the Ogden Wimmer's Sewing & Vacuum
- OR -
             1:30 p.m. - 4 p.m. @ the Layton Wimmer's Sewing & Vacuum
Please stop by the store to sign up so we know how many kits to make.

Thanks so much for reading my blog.
I love to hear from you, please leave a comment.

Autumn Burlap Serger Wreath

Happy Sunday, sewing friends!
Autumn is quickly approaching here in the U.S.,
that is, according to the calendar, not the weather

But before you know it, it will be Fall,
the weather will be cool and crisp,
and we will be celebrating God's good harvest

What better way to welcome in the new season than with a beautiful wreath

I will begin teaching Baby Lock serger classes locally at both Wimmer's locations
(Layton and Ogden) in September
This is the first project we will complete with our sergers

We will use either a 3 thread overlock stitch or the wave stitch,
which is exclusive to Baby Lock, to finish the edges of the burlap
(I used the wave stitch on my sample)

And we will make our own wire-edged ribbon from these lovely autumn colored fabrics.

After adding various floral picks and signage, we will go home with a gorgeous new wreath.

Are you beginning to plan for a seasonal change in decorating?
Share with us what is your favorite item to change up during the seasonal changes.

Thank you for spending some time with me today, friends.  Have a terrific week.

Serger Sundress

#marthapullenlicensedteacher  #sundress #serger #sewing
Happy May, sewing friends!
This is the May serger pattern that you will receive if you are
in my #sergerclub.

The beautiful gingham fabric and spaghetti bias can
be ordered from Chadwick Heirlooms in Virginia.
No, I do not receive any compensation from Chadwick Heirlooms,
I just know they stock these supplies because I order from them.
😊

I had the mini pom pom trim in my stash, so I used it instead of the
spaghetti bias braid around the bodice/ruffle seam.
Here's the bodice detail.
Those are rows and rows of coverstitches using embroidery thread in the needles.
If you don't have a coverstitch machine, you could achieve a similar effect
on your sewing machine, using a twin needle and embroidery thread.

The back bodice opening has three covered buttons to match the ruffles,
and a big bow.

Covered buttons are so very easy with a covered button kit,
which can be purchased inexpensively at quilt stores or fabric stores.
They add a custom detail to your finished garment.
The ties for that big bow are simply stitched to the top of the side seam.

The techniques we will practice this month are:
Ruffles - using the overlock and/or coverhem
Rolled Hem - using decorative embroidery threads
Topstitching - with the coverhem or sewing machine

My sweet granddaughter is excitedly waiting to wear her new sundress,
but until we meet on May 13 for serger club,
it will be on display at Nuttall's in Layton.

Thanks so much for stopping by today.

Ruffle Half Apron

Hello Spring Baking Season!!!
This is the April Serger Club project that I will be teaching at Nuttall's Bernina
on Saturday, April 8 from 10 a.m. to Noon.
The pattern is exclusive to licensed Martha Pullen serger teachers
and if you are in my class (2nd Saturday of each month) you will
receive this pattern.

I purchased the quilting cotton  locally at Nuttall's.
It is "Kitchen Love" by Cherry Guidry for Benartex Fabric.
And I purchased the spearmint gingham fabric from
Chadwick Heirlooms in Richmond, Virginia.

I'm particularly fond of that graphic print with all the baking terms on it.

The bottom edge and side edges of each ruffle is finished with a rolled hem.

The ties are nice and long to accommodate bakers of many sizes.   :)  Love that.

The ties are double layered so there is not a wrong or right side,
and the edges are finished with a rolled hem.

If you are in the local area and would like to sign up for serger club,
contact Nuttall's Bernina in Layton.
I would be honored to have you join our class.

If you are not local and would like to sew up a sweet ruffle apron,
contact your local sewing stores to inquire about licensed Martha Pullen serger teachers.

Happy baking and sewing, my friends.
